About this spot
Sheep Bridge is a steel suspension footbridge over the Verde River in Tonto National Forest, a 1989 replica of the original 1943 sheep-driving crossing. Access is via a long, rough dirt road (FR 269, high-clearance recommended), roughly 45 miles north of Carefree, with no services nearby, so come self-sufficient. Riverside pools near the bridge and nearby hot springs draw swimmers, with a rope swing and jump-off points reported around 45 feet. The main hazard is unpredictable water: submerged rocks, trees, and shallow spots shift with flow, so the Forest Service recommends scouting depth on site and swimming only during low, clear-water conditions rather than jumping blind.
