About this spot

The Grass Valley and Nevada City region offers several jumping locations, though some like Lake Englebright and Deer Creek Falls require challenging access. The Yuba River system provides multiple accessible options along several miles of riverbed. This spot on the South Fork of the Yuba involves a one-mile upstream hike on maintained state park trails. Access it by taking Interstate 80 east to Highway 49 (near Auburn), continuing through Grass Valley and Nevada City, then turning left onto State Route 20/Highway 49 heading north toward North San Juan and Downieville. Park at the bridge, cross on foot, and take the right trail upstream. The area features numerous jumps of varying heights. Important considerations include checking depths and clearances before each jump, as winter high water levels frequently relocate boulders and alter the riverbed. Another notable location is Mushroom Hole on the Middle Fork. From the first bridge, continue toward Downieville past North San Juan. After crossing the Middle Fork bridge, turn left immediately onto Moonshine Road, drive approximately one mile, and park without blocking driveways. The trailhead is on the left side. Following this trail for five miles downhill reaches Strawberry Hole, with Mushroom Hole situated another 250 yards downstream. Jump heights at this location range from 10 to 50 feet. Visitors should remove all trash, respect the local environment, and be cautious of nesting turtles in sandy areas near Mushroom Hole, as the community values responsible stewardship of these natural areas.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
