Access may result in misdemeanor citations and significant fines. From southbound I-5, take the Poinsettia Lane exit toward Aviara Parkway. Turn left onto Poinsettia Lane (1.0 miles), then right onto Aviara Parkway (2.1 miles). Aviara Parkway becomes Alga Road (1.9 miles). Turn right onto El Fuerte Street and drive uphill approximately 0.3 miles until reaching La Costa Meadows Elementary School. Park on the gravel area along the left side of El Fuerte Street near the left-side gate. From the gate, follow the dirt trail to the first fork and bear right. Continue to the electric tower, then follow the trail left down the hill and up a small steeper hill toward a second tower. Before the trail curves left toward this tower, take a right-side path near the conservation area sign. The canyon edge lies roughly 300 feet from the main trail. The terrain becomes steep and hazardous descending into the box canyon—exercise extreme caution in this section. The trail is overgrown with brush; long pants are advisable. The canyon borders residential apartments on its south side; residents frequently contact police. Approach from the north side if possible. Pack out all trash and do not mark canyon walls.
