About this spot
Open throughout the year with no entrance fee. From Redding, head north 65 miles on Interstate 5, then take the Highway 89 exit toward McCloud and Reno. Drive east on Highway 89, passing McCloud after nine miles, and continue 4.5 miles further to a small Forest Service marker for "River Access." Turn right and follow directional signs to reach the McCloud River Picnic Area and Lower McCloud Falls, bearing right at intersections. The location features three distinct falls within roughly two river miles of each other. The Lower Falls drops 12 feet and includes a picnic area, swimming hole, and jumping cliff with an exit ladder. This section suits swimmers of all levels and attracts kayakers in spring. The Middle Falls cascades 50 feet into a deep pool below and presents a challenging swim requiring expert-level skills. This dramatic 50-foot cascade appeals to photographers, and small diving birds called water ouzels inhabit the area behind the water flow. The Upper Falls produces a narrow, funnel-shaped stream dropping approximately 30 feet into a circular turquoise pool. Access to Upper Falls takes either a 3-mile round-trip hike from the Lower parking area or a 0.2-mile round-trip from the Upper Falls parking area. Viewing conditions are optimal from May through October. The terrain offers scenic trails accessible to various ages, with a five-minute walk connecting the Middle to Upper sections. Expect to encounter deer along the routes, particularly through nearby camping areas. The elevation sits at 2,600 feet. Returning visitors enjoy views of Mount Shasta in the distance.
