About this spot
Located on the Big Island between Mile Markers 69 and 70 on Highway 11, Ka Lae (meaning "the point") is accessed via South Point Road, a twelve-mile drive that passes through wind farms and open pastureland. This location marks the southernmost point in the United States and offers multiple attractions including ancient archaeological sites from around 300 A.D. (Hawaii's oldest), the Green Sand Beach (requiring approximately one hour to reach on foot), and a boat hoist area featuring cliff jump opportunities. Several jump points at the boat hoist area range from 30 to 40 feet in height above deep, protected waters. The water depth at the cliff base measures 50-100 feet with exceptional clarity. Metal ladders are available for climbing back to the top, or jumpers can use natural cliff formations that part to create pathways down to the water.
