About this spot
Black Rock, traditionally called Puu Kekaa, sits at the north end of Kaanapali Beach on Maui's west side, fronting the Sheraton Maui resort. Walk the beach path past the main jumping ledge and around the point to reach additional cliff faces; the classic leap is roughly 16 feet into deep, clear water. The site is also famous for a nightly torch-lighting cliff-dive ceremony performed by resort staff, separate from public jumping. Sea turtles and snorkelers frequent the surrounding reef, so watch your landing zone and give turtles room. Conditions are usually calm but shift with swell direction, and the area gets crowded around sunset. No formal jumping ban exists, though lifeguards may pause diving during ceremonies or high traffic.
Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
