About this spot
Sliding Rock is the U.S. Forest Service's official natural waterslide on Looking Glass Creek in Pisgah National Forest, off NC-276 about 45 minutes from Asheville, with a large paved lot streamside. A small day-use fee applies during the staffed season, Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Forest Service lifeguards, restrooms, and changing areas run 9am-6pm daily. The slide drops about 60 feet of smooth rock into a roughly 7-foot-deep plunge pool; water holds near 55 degrees year-round, and cold-shock plus slick rock at the entry are the hazards that matter most. Only capable swimmers should slide, and children under 7 must go with an adult. Outside the lifeguard season the site stays open but unsupervised. It is arguably the most heavily documented, iconic swimming hole in western North Carolina.
