About this spot

Elk River Falls, also called Big Falls, is a 50-foot ledge drop in Pisgah National Forest near Elk Park. From the NC-194/US-19E junction, go 0.7 miles on 19E, turn onto Old Mill Rd/SR1303, then right on Elk River Road; follow it 4 miles (the last stretch gravel) to the parking area, then a short, family-friendly 0.3-mile trail to the base. IMPORTANT: the U.S. Forest Service explicitly prohibits swimming or wading at the base — the plunge pool's violent recirculating current has caused multiple deaths and paralyzing injuries from cliff jumps here. This is a genuinely dangerous, well-documented spot; treat the posted warning as real. No permit needed to visit, but jumping goes directly against USFS guidance.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
