About this spot

Crabtree Falls is a roughly 70-foot waterfall just off the Blue Ridge Parkway (Milepost 339.5), straddling the McDowell/Yancey county line in Pisgah National Forest, reached by a moderate hike of about a mile (or a longer 2.5-mile loop) from the Parkway parking area. A large, well-known swimming hole sits at the base and draws heavy summer crowds. The hazard that matters: multiple people have died here climbing or jumping from the rocks above the falls, and the Forest Service explicitly warns against climbing, standing on, swimming near, or jumping from the falls, especially in high or swift water. Stay in the designated viewing/pool area rather than the ledges above. Parking is easy via the Parkway; expect crowds on summer weekends.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
