About this spot

Located roughly 20 miles from Rapid City, Hippy Hole is accessed from Keystone via HWY 40 heading toward Hermosa. After traveling approximately 3.5 miles from town, you'll descend a steep hill and encounter a bridge spanning the canyon bottom. A small marked trailhead parking area with fencing sits just before this bridge. From the parking lot, follow the trail for about 3 miles to reach the swimming hole. The site features an expansive pool comparable in size to an Olympic pool, bordered by rock formations and a waterfall. The primary jump launches from the uppermost rocks adjacent to the waterfall, offering a 30-foot drop into water of similar depth. A small cave occupies the area behind the jump site; a route near this cave provides access to the highest jump location. The tallest jump originates from a leaning rock pillar extending over the water. However, this jump becomes hazardous during low water conditions, as the landing area reduces to only 6-8 feet deep unless approached with significant running speed. Water levels significantly affect safety at this location.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
