About this spot

Whitetop Laurel Falls (also called Big Rock Falls) is an 8-foot ledge drop on Whitetop Laurel Creek along the Virginia Creeper Trail, about 4 miles east of Damascus off Route 58. Park at the Route 58 pulloff and walk or bike the flat Creeper Trail downstream roughly a mile to the water. The creek is one of Virginia's premier wild trout streams and stays cold even in summer; the pool below the ledge is a well-known swimming stop for trail users, documented by Virginia's Dept. of Wildlife Resources and regional press. Rocks stay slick with algae and current builds fast after rain, so wade in carefully rather than jumping from the ledge. No lifeguard or facilities beyond the trailhead, and it draws crowds on summer weekends.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly.
