About this spot
Whiteoak Canyon Trail starts near Syria, Virginia, inside Shenandoah National Park's south district — expect the park's $30-per-vehicle fee (or an annual pass) at the entrance station. About a mile in, the creek opens into swimming holes with modest jumps and a natural slide; the well-known 20-30-foot falls plunge into a deep pool, but pool edges are undercut and current near the base can be strong. The bigger, more aggressive cliff jumps people associate with this general area are actually on the adjoining Cedar Run Falls Trail, not this one — don't assume every ledge here is jumpable. Mountain water stays cold even in summer, and rocks are slick; rescues have been reported on this trail.
Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
