About this spot
The Jug is a roughly one-mile slot canyon on Salome Creek in the Sierra Ancha area northeast of Roosevelt Lake, reached by a rugged, unmarked approach hike with no fee and no easy access — expect route-finding and a scramble into the canyon. Inside, visitors work through waterslides, deep swims and rock-hopping to the signature feature: a roughly 20-foot jump, or a 25-foot rappel from a fixed anchor for those who skip it. The rock at the jump platform is notoriously slick, and in low-water summer months the pool can be too shallow to jump safely, making the rappel effectively mandatory — full canyoneering gear (rope, harness, rappel device) is needed then. Documented canyon rescues and injuries make this a spot for experienced, well-prepared visitors only, on public Tonto National Forest land.
