About this spot

The Petoskey Breakwall at Bayfront Park is a Michigan rite of passage — Michigan Radio's bucket list literally includes jumping off it. Park in the pier/Bayfront Park lot and walk out on the breakwall; jump into cold, clear Lake Michigan and climb out on the built-in ladders that line both sides (jumpers report the harbor side has fewer rocks below — scout your ladder before you leap). No lifeguard, unpredictable currents, boat traffic in and out of the marina, and the park closes sunset to 5 a.m.; the yacht club has added life rings along the wall for a reason. Even midsummer the lake will take your breath — plan your exit before you jump.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
