About this spot
A rugged outcrop of ancient basalt on the Lake Superior shoreline of Presque Isle Park in Marquette, reached by a short foot path from a small lot off Peter White Drive. Jumping here — roughly 20 to 30 feet into open water — is an unofficial but decades-old Northern Michigan University tradition, not a sanctioned activity; the city discourages it and posts no lifeguards. The water is genuinely cold, often nearer 38-40°F than a summer lake, so cold shock is the real hazard alongside Superior's unpredictable swells and submerged rock near shore. Jump feet-first, go with at least one other person, never at night, and check the water below before you leap.
