About this spot
Big Spring Falls is a real, easily reached feature in Banning State Park on the Kettle River near Sandstone, MN, about 1.5 miles via a short trail from the Pine Ave S trailhead (also reachable by canoe from Robinson Park). The Kettle drops roughly 5 feet over a broad sandstone ledge, was submerged behind a mill dam until 1995, and at low water exposes a beach and wide sandstone shelves people wade and wet their feet on. No source documents an established cliff-jumping culture here specifically. The Kettle is regionally known for whitewater, and at high spring flow the beach and falls disappear underwater entirely, making the area genuinely dangerous - stay well back when the river is running high.
