About this spot
Whale Beach is a boat-access or steep hike-in cove on Lake Tahoe's Nevada shore, roughly 1.5-2.5 miles south of Sand Harbor off NV-28, named for a whale-shaped rock exposed when the lake is low. There is no dedicated trailhead lot; people park at roadside pullouts on NV-28 or the gated Secret Harbor lot (open Memorial Day-October) and walk down a steep, unmarked path. Jumps run about 5 to 20 feet off granite boulders into clear, cold water whose depth is unmarked and varies with lake level, so scout from the water first. Boat traffic, submerged rocks near shore, and Tahoe's cold water year-round are the main hazards. It falls within Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park; confirm current access rules before visiting.
Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
