About this spot

Jawbone Falls drops about 30 feet on the Tuckasegee River headwaters in Panthertown Valley, just upstream of Riding Ford Falls, reached by a short path along the bank from Riding Ford's pool. Multiple trail guides single out its wide pool with a sandy shore, rimmed by rhododendron and white pine, as one of the better swimming and wading spots on the "Tuckasegee Trio" route out of the Cold Mountain Road trailhead via Devil's Elbow Trail. Expect an unofficial, unsigned footpath, slick granite near the water, and a genuinely remote backcountry setting with no cell coverage. It sits on public Nantahala National Forest land with no permit needed, though the wider Panthertown trail network suffered real storm damage from Hurricane Helene in 2024 — check Friends of Panthertown for current trail status first.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
