About this spot
Tamolitch Pool, better known as Blue Pool, sits on the McKenzie River Trail in Willamette National Forest, about 75 minutes east of Eugene near Trail Bridge Reservoir. Park at the McKenzie River Trailhead (restrooms, no fee) and hike roughly 2.1 miles over rocky, root-strewn trail — sturdy shoes matter. The striking blue color comes from spring water surfacing through porous lava rock. Surrounding ledges run 10-60 feet above the pool. Water holds around 37F year-round, cold enough to cause life-threatening shock on impact, and cell signal is minimal to none. Jumping isn't officially banned but is strongly discouraged by the Forest Service — injuries and deaths occur here almost every year.
