About this spot

To reach this location in Big Bend National Park, enter via I385 and continue to Panther Junction Visitor Center. Turn left toward Rio Grande Village, located in the southeastern portion of the park. Approximately 1-2 miles before arriving at the village (which consists of a single store and two gas pumps), turn left onto the Ernst Tinaja road. This route requires four-wheel-drive or high-clearance vehicles. Follow this dirt road past Candelilla Campsite, then continue until you see the Ernst Tinaja sign and turn right. Drive toward Ernst Tinaja Campsite #1, potentially passing Campsite #2 along the way. Continue past Campsite #1 on the main path until you reach a sign for the spring and a small parking area accommodating several vehicles. From there, hike less than a mile to reach the spring located in the desert landscape. The left side provides a jumping platform, while slick rock ahead can be used as a natural slide. Bring a container to collect water from the tinaja to create a slick surface. If navigation proves difficult, the staff at the Rio Grande Village store can provide specific guidance.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
