About this spot

Start at Big Bend National Park via I385 in Texas and drive toward Panther Junction Visitor Center. Turn left toward Rio Grande Village, located southeast of the park. About 1-2 miles before reaching the village (which consists of a single store and two gas pumps at an intersection), turn left onto the road toward Ernst Tinaja. This route requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle or high-clearance jeep. Continue several miles past the Candelilla Campsite, then watch for the Ernst Tinaja sign and turn right onto the dirt road. Head toward Ernst Tinaja Campsite #1, potentially passing Campsite #2 en route. Drive past Campsite #1 and continue straight until you spot a spring sign and small parking area with room for a few vehicles. A short walk of less than a mile on the marked path leads to the location. The jump site sits within desert terrain. Participants have jumped from the left side upon approach and also slid down smooth rock formations ahead. Bringing a container to collect water from the tinaja helps create a slicker surface. Staff at the Rio Grande Village store can provide additional guidance if needed.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
