About this spot
Dog Head Falls is a compact but powerful 6-foot drop on the Lamoille River in Johnson, named for a boulder below the falls shaped like a dog's profile. It's reached by a short, easy walk from a pull-off on East River Road, and is known locally as one of the better swimming spots on the river, with a deep plunge pool at the base. Paddlers treat it as a hazard rather than a playground — a dedicated portage trail was built around it because the hydraulics at the base turn dangerous at higher flows, and footing on the rocks stays slick and uneven year-round. Swim only at low, calm summer flows, never after rain, and skip it if the river is running high.
Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
