About this spot
The Grass Valley and Nevada City region holds numerous jumping opportunities. While spots like Lake Englebright and Deer Creek Falls exist locally, they present access challenges. The Yuba River system offers multiple locations spread across several miles with straightforward entry points. The South Fork of the Yuba River requires approximately one mile of hiking upstream via state park trails. From Interstate 80, take Highway 49 east toward Grass Valley and Nevada City. Continue on State Route 20/Highway 49 north toward North San Juan and Downieville. Park at the bridge lot and cross the old bridge on foot, then follow the trail upstream. Numerous jumping options at varying heights line this section. Always verify water depth and overhead clearance before jumping, as winter high water levels frequently relocate rocks and alter river bottoms. Mushroom Hole on the middle fork represents another notable location. Continue past the first bridge toward Downieville and North San Juan. After crossing the middle fork bridge, turn left immediately onto Moonshine Road. Park after one mile (avoid blocking driveways). Find the trailhead on the left side. Strawberry Hole lies five miles downhill; Mushroom Hole sits an additional 250 yards downstream. Jump options at this site range from 10 to 50 feet. When visiting either location, leave no trash behind and show consideration for local ecosystems. Watch for nesting turtles along the route to Mushroom Hole.
