About this spot
One of several flooded granite quarries left behind by Cape Ann's early-1900s stone industry, in the Bay View section of Gloucester. Take Route 127 through Lanesville toward Bay View, turn onto Quarry Street, and follow it to its end for a foot path into the pit (park considerately — residents report unfamiliar cars). The quarry holds still, very deep, cold water inside sheer granite walls, with reported jump points from about 10 to 80 feet. No Cape Ann quarry is a designated swim area: there are no lifeguards, and the city has posted no-trespassing and no-swimming signs after fatal incidents at nearby pits, including an 18-year-old's drowning at Vernon's Pit in 2022. Jump only at your own risk.
