About this spot
Whaleback Falls is a small 8-foot cascade on the Davidson River in Pisgah National Forest, about 8 miles north of Brevard off US 276 and FS 475, roughly 5.5 miles from the popular Sliding Rock. A short but steep scramble down the bank leads to a 40-foot pool named for a whale-shaped boulder at its center. Multiple hiking guides confirm it as a genuine local swimming hole, though sources are explicit it's for wading and cooling off, not diving — there's no beach or ledge suited to jumping, and the surrounding rocks get slippery when wet. The hazard that matters is entering the water above the cascade, where slick rock and current can sweep a swimmer into the falls. It sits on public national forest land with no access restrictions.
Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
