About this spot
Nantahala Cascades is a scenic series of drops on the upper Nantahala River, reached via Wayah Road with pull-offs for viewing near Topton. Duke Energy schedules a handful of whitewater release days each year that turn the section into Class III+ to Class V water for expert kayakers; outside releases the flow is much lower. It is a roadside/paddling attraction rather than a documented swimming or jumping spot, and water levels can change rapidly and dangerously during releases.
Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
