About this spot
Great Falls is Connecticut's highest-volume waterfall, a 50-foot drop spanning about 112 feet on the Housatonic River at Falls Village (Canaan). Park along Housatonic River Road — the lot is small, so arrive early — and walk down to the viewing area beside the old hydro dam. Much of the river's normal flow is diverted upstream for power generation, but heavy rain restores full volume fast, changing conditions quickly. Swimming and jumping are officially prohibited, and for real reasons: multiple people have drowned or been seriously injured jumping or swimming here, the base has dangerous currents and undertow, cell service is unreliable, and the site is difficult for rescue crews to reach. People still swim and jump here regularly despite the ban — free access, no permit, but genuinely one of the state's most dangerous jump spots.
