About this spot
Kapena Falls sits in a narrow Nuuanu gulch off Pali Highway, reached via a short walk from the parking lot at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary (lot closes 3:30pm); parking and access are free. The main jump is roughly 35 feet off the rock face into a pool locals describe as fairly shallow. Hawaii's DLNR has said it does not plan to close the falls and that jumping isn't illegal, but there's no lifeguard or official oversight. The hazard that matters most: water turns murky and can rise fast after rain, hiding rocks and current changes, and multiple serious jumping accidents have been documented here, so check conditions and depth before leaping.
