About this spot
Maunawili Falls is a real, popular swimming hole in a forested Kailua valley, with a roughly 20-foot upper drop feeding two pools locals jump into from ledges near 20-30 feet. The original Maunawili Road trailhead has been closed by the state since July 2021 for trail rehab, with no reopening date as of 2026; legal access is now the longer Maunawili Demonstration Trail from the Pali Highway hairpin turnout, about 5 miles round trip. Signs on-site warn against jumping after past serious injuries, and depths shift with rainfall, so scout before committing. Leptospirosis bacteria from feral pig and rat urine live in these streams — avoid submerging open cuts or swallowing water. Flash flooding can rise fast during storms; check weather before hiking in.
