About this spot
The Mokes are the real Mokulua Islands, twin islets about three-quarters of a mile off Lanikai/Kailua, reached by kayak, SUP, or outrigger (roughly 30-60 minutes each way). Moku Nui, the larger island, allows landing; jumps in the 10-60 foot range exist along its rocky far side, reached by a rugged, sharp-rock scramble — wear footwear. Both islets form a state seabird sanctuary: access is sunrise-to-sunset only, a $3/person/day landing permit is required, Moku Iki is entirely off-limits, and visitors are officially restricted to Moku Nui's southwest beach, with interior exploration 'strictly prohibited' to protect nesting wedge-tailed shearwaters. Treat the cliff-jump side as pushing past a real access rule, not a sanctioned activity, and never land after dark.
