About this spot
Also called Locke Falls, this cascade on the Isinglass River sits within Barrington's conserved Gonic Trails network, reached via a short walk from the Rochester Neck Road trailhead (parking is limited, arrive early). Remnants of a 19th-century sawmill and gristmill once owned by John Locke still sit above the falls. Locals swim in the natural pools below, and some slide down the ledges from the boulder area at the top into the pools -- a family-friendly, low-key spot rather than a serious cliff-jumping venue. The hazard that matters is slippery, algae-covered ledges and variable current strength depending on recent rainfall; there are no lifeguards or posted depth markers. Access is on town/conservation-commission land and open to the public.
