About this spot
Known locally as The Quarries, this cluster of flooded Swenson granite pits on Rattlesnake Hill is Concord's best-known swimming hole complex. The classic approach is from the rear of Calvary Cemetery off North State Street, via an unmarked wooded trail that's easy to miss; multiple pits sit across the hill, with rock ledges from about 7 feet up to roughly 40 feet on the main pit. Cold, clear spring water year-round. Depth varies sharply between ledges and submerged quarry debris is a real risk, so scout every jump. Legality is genuinely unsettled — city, state, and police have each pointed at the others for years — so use is tolerated but never sanctioned, and the isolated site has no supervision of any kind.
