About this spot
Located off Base Station Road near Route 302 in Bretton Woods/Twin Mountain, where the Ammonoosuc River narrows into a rock gorge. The main plunge is only about 8 feet, but jumpers use ledges up to roughly 25 feet on either side of the gorge, and three pools sit below the falls. Water is cold even in midsummer and swimming is only advisable at low flow. The hazard that matters: during moderate-to-high water a whirlpool forms in the main pothole with strong recirculating currents, and this spot is regarded as one of the deadliest swimming holes in New Hampshire after Huntington Gorge in Vermont, with multiple drownings recorded. Jumping should be attempted only by experienced locals who know current conditions, and never during high water.
