About this spot

John's Jump Falls is a 25-40 ft waterfall on Mill Creek in Nantahala National Forest, right off NC-281 about 4 miles north of the South Carolina line and a few miles south of Gorges State Park. A large roadside gravel pullout serves as parking, and a short, steep quarter-mile path drops to the base. The falls carries good volume after rain and feeds a pool that sources describe anywhere from calm and shallow to about 15 ft deep near the plunge - wade in and judge depth yourself rather than jumping blind, since submerged rocks and undertow are the real risk. It's a longtime, heavily-visited (200+ online reviews) summer swimming stop, free and open on national forest land. Named for early-1900s local John Hinkle, not for a jumping legend.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
