About this spot
Opossum Creek Falls sits in Sumter National Forest near Long Creek, South Carolina, reached via a trailhead on Turkey Run Road. The hike runs roughly two to four miles through hardwood forest before a scramble over boulders and logs along the Chattooga River leads to the falls. The main drop is about 50 feet, with reports of a lower 30-foot section adding to a total near 70-80 feet. At the base, the creek widens into a sandy beach and swimming hole that is the area's main draw. The plunge pool's recirculating current is the hazard that matters here — it can trap even strong swimmers — and the approach rocks are slick when wet. The trail is on public Forest Service land, open year-round, no fees, dogs permitted.
Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
