About this spot
Hell's Gate is a pair of roughly 90-foot limestone bluffs framing a narrow cove on the south end of Possum Kingdom Lake, accessible only by boat — there is no shore trail or parking lot, so plan on a pontoon or ski boat and expect a crowded anchorage on summer weekends and the Fourth of July. It has hosted the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series five times, with professionals diving 65-90 ft, but unsanctioned jumping off the main cliffs is illegal outside those events and is enforced; casual jumpers are typically directed to nearby Devil's Island, where shorter 10-20 ft jumps are permitted. Submerged rock ledges, heavy boat traffic, and sudden depth changes make the cove hazardous even where jumping is allowed.
