About this spot
55 MPH Falls is a documented 40-foot, multi-tier cascade on the Whitewater River near Sapphire, part of a rugged six-waterfall series. One detailed trip report calls the pool below it 'gigantic' and a genuine swimming hole, though that's currently a single source. Access is via a difficult, largely unmarked USFS route (or a shuttle from NC 281), with rope-assisted scrambles and slick rock crossings elsewhere on the hike. High water makes river crossings dangerous; low summer flow is recommended. No fees; land is a mix of Nantahala National Forest and private Heady Mountain community frontage with courtesy access.
Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
