About this spot

Portage Left Falls is the lowermost of six documented waterfalls on the Whitewater River near Sapphire, a 20-foot drop described in trip reports as simply 'pretty.' No source documents swimming or cliff jumping here specifically. It's reached via a difficult, largely unmarked hike along the river gorge, with rope-assisted scrambles and stream crossings that turn dangerous in high water; low summer flow and trekking poles are recommended. Access runs through Nantahala National Forest with a stretch of private Heady Mountain community land along the route.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
