About this spot
Cascade on South Brook is reached via a short, well-defined path of well under a tenth of a mile from a free parking area on Notch Road, in Cheshire's Stafford Hill Wildlife Management Area. The brook drops about 8 feet over a two-tiered, high-angle ledge into a fairly large plunge pool that multiple hiking guides describe as a fair-to-good local swimming spot, best checked against recent water-quality conditions. This is a wading and dunking spot rather than a jumping one -- the drop is short and no jumping culture is documented here. The main hazards are slick, moss-covered rock and stronger current after heavy rain, so scout depth and footing before entering. Dogs are allowed and there is no fee, but there is no handicap access.
