About this spot

Lower Hungry River Falls sits on the Hungry River in the Green River Game Land near Flat Rock, a short half-mile round trip from a pull-off on Big Hungry Road off Upward Road near I-26 exit 53. Since an old mill dam on top was removed in 2015, the river spreads across a wide rock dome into a small, genuinely deep plunge pool with a sandy beach just downstream, making it one of the more popular swimming holes in the area, documented across many trail guides and hundreds of AllTrails reviews. The last stretch down to the water is steep and rope-assisted rather than stairs, and 2024's Hurricane Helene flooding scoured the riverbed and left debris on the access path, so footing near the pool should not be assumed stable. It's public game land, open and free to visit.

Safety first. Cliff jumping is inherently dangerous and can cause serious injury or death. Conditions — water depth, submerged hazards, and access — change constantly. CliffScout is community-sourced reference information, not a guarantee a spot is safe. Always assess the conditions yourself before jumping, and never jump where you're unsure. You assume all risk.
