About this spot
Chauga Narrows sits on the Chauga River near Mountain Rest, SC, reached via a roughly half-mile trail from a pull-off past Blackwell Bridge off Whetstone Road. The river funnels through a tight, Class VI rock chute (about a 25-foot drop over a 200-foot run) before dumping into a large, deep pool with a gradual, sloping entry, ideal for swimming and cooling off on hot days, though the final stretch of trail is often slick, mossy rock. This is a well-documented Upcountry swimming hole, featured by South Carolina's official tourism site, the SC Picture Project, and local paddling guides. There's no cliff to jump from here; the draw is the chute and pool itself. Flow and depth swing sharply with rain, so check conditions before swimming, and never attempt to swim or run the narrows during high water.
