About this spot
Abrams Falls is a real, well-known 20-foot waterfall in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, reached via a roughly 5-mile round-trip trail from the gravel lot at the Abrams Falls trailhead on Cades Cove Loop Road (no permit needed, but the loop road backs up on busy days). The trail follows Abrams Creek through hardwood forest to the falls' plunge pool. NPS explicitly bans swimming and jumping here: despite the inviting look, a rotating undertow at the base has been tied to nearly 30 drowning deaths since the 1970s, and slick, algae-covered rocks make falls easy. Stay on the viewing areas and skip the water entirely.
