About this spot
Superior Falls drops about 90 feet on the Montreal River, the Wisconsin-Michigan border stream that empties into Lake Superior near Saxon Harbor. Xcel Energy owns the hydro-plant land here but maintains a gravel access road, parking lot and paved overlook path, so visiting is legal if you stick to the marked route. Local kids have long jumped from ledges between the two main drops into the deep plunge pool below, a spot documented in regional swimming-hole guides and jump videos. Flow is regulated by an upstream dam, so water levels and current strength can shift quickly; the red sandstone ledges get slick, and the gorge walls are steep with no rails. No fee, but respect posted utility boundaries away from the falls and plant.
